Jason Appleson, a proud FYHS alumnus of the class of 2003, has excelled in the world of finance, now serving as Managing Director and Head of PGIM Fixed Income's Municipal Bond Team. Jason, his wife, a pediatric hospitalist, and their three children have made Springfield, New Jersey, their home. Their family has been rooted in the vibrant local Jewish community for the past two years.
Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jason faced limited options for a Jewish high school. His parents sent him to FYHS, inspired by his older brother's positive experience. After spending his freshman year in the dorms, Jason’s family relocated to Chicago, making him an in-towner for the remainder of his high school career.
Rebbeim and Influences
Jason fondly recalls the impact of his rebbeim, particularly Rabbi Polstein, his senior rebbe, and Rabbi Shechter, who officiated his wedding. "They taught me so much about responsibility, independence, and connection to Torah." Jason’s involvement with Yeshivas Hakayitz as both a camper and counselor further deepened these lessons.
From High School to Finance
Following FYHS, Jason attended Ohr Yerushalayim in Israel, then Yeshiva University and Touro College, where he earned his degree in finance. Entering the workforce during the 2008 financial crisis, Jason secured his first role at AllianceBernstein. His career trajectory included a stint at the Federal Reserve Bank, leading to his current leadership role at PGIM Fixed Income.
Lessons from FYHS
“FYHS taught me independence,” Jason reflects. “Living away from home at 14 forces you to grow up quickly. Balancing shacharis, night seder, and academics taught me discipline. And the friendships I made are lifelong; my best friends are from high school. We even have an active WhatsApp group for our class.”
A Defining Moment
One of Jason’s most vivid memories is experiencing 9/11 at FYHS. “We gathered to watch the news in the lunchroom, then went to the Beis Midrash to say Tehillim. It was an intense moment of unity and strength in numbers, much like davening on Yomim Noraim.”
Advice for Current Students
“Embrace the lessons you’re taught. Balance your efforts with emuna. Life has ups and downs, but understanding that everything comes from Hashem is a powerful tool. Trust the process and stay connected to your values.”
Jason’s journey highlights the lasting impact of the education and values instilled at FYHS, showing how the skills and relationships formed there can shape a meaningful and fulfilling path forward.
